The RYA Powerboat Level 2 is a practical, hands-on course for both beginners and improvers, teaching you how to confidently operate a RIB or small powerboat in inshore waters. It forms the basis for the International Certificate of Competence (ICC), ideal for those looking to boat abroad, and can be commercially endorsed to skipper small commercial vessels.
RYA Powerboat Level 2 Course
The RYA Powerboat Level 2 is a hands-on, practical course designed to equip you with the skills and knowledge needed to safely operate a RIB or small powerboat in inshore waters. This qualification can also be commercially endorsed under certain MCA codes of practice, allowing you to skipper small commercial vessels.
Attend this two-day course at Skye Powerboat’s RYA-recognised Training Centre in Staffin, located on the stunning Isle of Skye.
Over two action-packed days, you'll take part in an engaging and informative course covering key areas such as close-quarters handling, high-speed manoeuvres, man overboard drills, IRPCS (collision regulations), anchoring, securing to a mooring buoy, and coming alongside pontoons. With plenty of hands-on practice, you'll be guided by an experienced, qualified RYA instructor who knows how to balance professionalism with a good sense of humour.
At Skye Powerboat, we use a Humber RIB to ensure your training reflects the type of boat you're most likely to use. All are powered by reliable and clean-running Suzuki outboard—guaranteed to bring both performance and a smile.
Our training centre at the community owned Staffin Harbour, offers a welcoming and professional set up. Even when weather keeps us off the water, our indoor sessions simulate real-world scenarios as closely as possible.

Training RYA VHF SRC Radio Course

The RYA VHF Short Range Certificate (SRC) is the legal minimum qualification required to operate VHF and VHF DSC radio equipment on any UK-flagged vessel voluntarily fitted with a radio. This applies to both fixed and handheld sets.
Attend this essential one-day course at Skye Powerboat’s RYA-recognised Training Centre in Staffin, located on the stunning Isle of Skye.
We provide hands-on training using real, professionally adapted VHF DSC radios from Icom, ensuring a realistic and practical learning experience.
All modern VHF radios include DSC capability, allowing direct calls to specific vessels. If you hold a pre-1999 VHF licence, you’ll need to upgrade by completing this course—either in person or online, followed by a short, invigilated exam.

This one day course is for anyone interested in First Aid from a boating perspective. Recommended by both the MCA and HSE.
This one-day course is designed for anyone looking to gain first aid knowledge from a boating perspective.
Attend this essential one-day course at Skye Powerboat’s RYA-recognised Training Centre in Staffin, located on the stunning Isle of Skye.
Recommended by both the MCA and HSE, the course meets the requirements for professional skippers of small craft operating within 60 miles of a safe haven, including Boatmasters. It also satisfies the Senior First Aid certificate requirement for offshore racers under ISAF regulations (OSR 4.08.4).

An in-depth introduction to chartwork, navigation, meteorology, and basic seamanship. This course is invaluable for building confidence in onboard decision-making and serves as excellent preparation for the Day Skipper practical course.
This course provides you with the essential knowledge to navigate familiar waters by day, including a basic introduction to navigation lights for night-time powerboating. It covers both traditional chartwork and electronic navigation techniques.
Typically delivered over six consecutive days, the course can be challenging but highly rewarding, equipping you with a strong foundation in coastal navigation.
Our training goes beyond the basics to help those working commercially apply their skills effectively in professional settings. The course is suitable for anyone operating workboats, powerboats, motor cruisers, and yachts.

RYA Yachtmaster Theory

Advanced Training for Experienced Skippers. For those with Day Skipper theory or equivalent, this course builds skills for safe coastal and offshore navigation by day and night. It’s ideal preparation for the Coastal Skipper practical and Yachtmaster Offshore exams, covering advanced navigation, pilotage, and meteorology.
This course builds on Day Skipper theory and involves 40 hours of tuition, exams, and homework. It is usually delivered over several weekends or 6 to 7 consecutive intensive days.
